1982年生まれ。都立武蔵高校卒業後ヨーロッパへ留学し、仏パリ国立高等音楽院、独ベルリン芸術大学、同大学院、伊コモ湖国際ピアノアカデミーにて学ぶ。

20歳でアメリカ・クリーヴランド国際ピアノコンクール優勝(日本人初）及びショパン賞を受賞。 その他、ヘルシンキ・マイリンド国際ピアノコンクールで第2位、サンタンデール・パロマ・オシェア国際ピアノコンクールで第3位入賞。
2003年ＮＹリンカーンセンターでデビューして以来、全米で50回以上公演。ヨーロッパ、南アフリカ、アジアでも定期的に演奏する。2008年、ウィグモアホールでイギリスデビュー。

これまでに招待された著名な音楽祭・演奏会シリーズとして、海外では、ドゥシニキ・ショパン(ポーランド), オヴェール・スュル・オワーズ、ピアノ・オ・ジャコバン、ピアノ・アン・ヴァロワ、アンヌシー、アニマート、カンヌ（フランス)、サンタンデール、アルベニス・エン・コンテクスト（スペイン）、ミュジカル・セプタンブル（スイス)、モンテ・アルジェンタリオ（イタリア)、サン・リバー、サンドポイント、マイラ・ヘス(アメリカ)など、日本ではピアニスト100、トッパン・ピアニスツ、ピアノエトワールなどがある。

オーケストラとの共演は、クリーヴランド管弦楽団、フィンランド放送交響楽団、ドレスデン管弦楽団、イル・ド・フランス国立管弦楽団、ガリシア王立管弦楽団、新日本フィルハーモニー、ヨハネスバーグ管弦楽団など、多数。ローレンス・スミス、ラファエル・フリューベック・デ・ブルゴス、ポール・ナドラー、ハンヌ・リントゥ、フランソワ・ザビエル・ロット、ヤッキャ・リン、エヴァ・オッリカイネンなど著名な指揮者たちと共演する。
現代作品の演奏にも積極的に務め、これまで武満徹、宍戸睦郎、ルノー・ギャヌー、ティエリー・エスケッシュ、ティエリー・ユイレ、エイノユハニ・ラウタヴァーラ、ソンジュ・オウらの作品を世界・国内初演する。

ＣＤは、ナクソスから2枚（シューマン、武満徹ピアノ作品集）、（株）ハーモニーから「アルベニス／イベリア全曲他」、アクースティカから「シューマン／謝肉祭ほか、トッパン・ライブリサイタル」をリリース。CD発売につづいて、「ピアノによる武満徹へのオマージュ」と題したレクチャーコンサート、アルベニス没後100年（2009）、生誕150年（2010）を記念した演奏会を世界各地で実施する。

2010年は、ドイツ、フランス、スペイン、イタリア、フィンランド、サントドミンゴ、中国、日本での演奏会の他、アクースティカレーベルでリストの作品をCD録音する。2011年は、ヨーロッパ、日本、南アフリカのほか、初めて南米でのツアーを予定している。各公演には、ヨーロッパでの研鑽を活かし、常に独自のコンセプトに基づいた多彩なプログラミングで臨んでいる。

これまでブルーノ・リグット、マリーフランソワーズ・ビュッケ、クラウス・ヘルヴィッヒ、 井桁和美、佐藤京子の各氏に師事。現在ベルリン在住。

Kotaro Fukuma、 born in Tokyo in 1982、 is the youngest pianist to record a commercial CD set of the complete Iberia by Albeniz (Harmony label)、 as well as all eight Novelletten by Schumann (Naxos)、 and the complete piano solo works by Toru Takemitsu (Naxos).
In 2003、 Kotaro won both First Prize and the Chopin Prize at the 15th Cleveland International Piano Competition at the age of 20. Since then、 he gave his debut recital at Lincoln Center in NY and has performed nearly 50 concerts in the USA.He has also performed regularly in Europe、 South Africa、 and Asia
Kotaro has been a soloist with a number of orchestras、 among them the Cleveland Orchestra、 Finnish Radio Symphony、 Dresden Philharmonic、 Royal Philharmonic Orchestra Galicia、 Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra、 and New Japan Philharmonic. Kotaro already has more than 35 piano concertos in his repertoire、 ranging from classical to modern styles.In 2008、 Kotaro toured in South Africa、 where he gave 14 concerts within a month、 later played MacDowell's Second Piano Concerto with the Canton Symphony Orchestra in Ohio in recognition of the composer's 100th death anniversary. He premiered a composition by Thierry Huillet and also made a debut recital at Wigmore Hall in London、 where he was highly acclaimed. One month later、 he participated in the prestigious Santander Piano Competition in Spain、 capturing the Bronze medal.
Kotaro has studied at the Conservatoire National Superieur de Musique de Paris (2001-05)、 at the Universitat der Kunste Berlin (2005 - present) and at the Como International Piano Academy in Italy (2006 - present).
